Catriona says;

“Occupational Therapy supports children and young people to develop and thrive, enabling them to achieve their full potential.”

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy for children and young people addresses difficulties in everyday activities, for example in play, leisure, at school, or in self care activities such as dressing or feeding. Difficulties may be the result of physical, sensory, cognitive or emotional needs, all of which occupational therapists are uniquely trained to recognise and treat.

Why is Occupational Therapy for Children and Young People important?

Independence in daily life is an intergral part of childhood development, producing confidence and positive self-esteem. If a child or young person has difficulty in accomplishing areas of daily life, then over time this can lead to a reduction in self-confidence, a loss of motivation, frustration, poor attainment within school, anxiety and in some cases negative behaviours can result.

Early recognition of a child’s difficulty and timely occupational therapy intervention can work to overcome difficulties, reducing any long term impact through a multi agency approach.

What activities can an Occupational Therapist help with?

✔️ Achieve independence in self-care skills such as dressing, using cutlery or brushing teeth

✔️ Develop play skills

✔️ Improve fine motor skills

✔️ Improve motor skills, for example using playground equipment, taking part in school PE, throwing and catching or riding a bike.

✔️ Improve attention and concentration, supporting children in class and at home

✔️ Develop pre-writing skills

✔️ Improve handwriting

✔️ Facilitate independence in life skills, such as shopping, cooking or using public transport.
